Prime Dinner with D&K

To Prime Steak and Grill with Krisie and Dan and, as Mondays are BYO with no corkage,

There was a theme - father and son were dining and drinking; Zinfandel maestro Joel Peterson owns and makes Once & Future and his son Morgan owns and makes Bedrock.

Krisie said her steak was the best she'd ever had

Lunch with T&E, D&K

Beech Road Lights

Rain, wind and sodden paths meant we didn't take the walks we intended, but this evening we took Dan and Krisie on a brief  walk through Ellis Fields at dusk. Many houses were decorated with lights,  like this one in Ellis Fields.

But none outshone the house in Beech Road, which again put on a display that cars stop to gaze at.

Xmas Postboxes

Again the clever knitters have decorated 82 St Albans' pillar boxes with festive tops. Here are just three of them

Probus Christmas Lunch

Probus 37th Annual Christmas lunch was held at Verulam Golf Club. Some people didn't book because of Covid, and the recent rapid rise of Omicron variant  leading to a Government recommendation to scale back one's social activities led others to cancel, but we still had 65 booked.

I chose the spiced carrot and lentil soup to start with and it was really enjoyable with a bite of chilli, then I had  traditional roast turkey.

There were two thick slices of turkey, which I couldn't finish. I'd have preferred more veg, but the meal was tasty.

Christmas pud, garnished with redcurrants, with brandy sauce was well presented but ordinary,

and there were mince pies and small cakes to follow with coffee and poppers.

I was responsible for choosing and sourcing wines.

The white was

2021 Zalze Chenin Blanc Bush Vine (South Africa, Western Cape)

Terrific: dry but not acidic, fruit and balance and it went down a treat with those present.

and the red was

2020 Domaine Camp Galhan Cévennes Les Frigouliers (France, Languedoc, Cévennes)

100% Grenache; soft fruity drinkable. Another wine that charmed those gathered. It went well with roast turkey.

A bottle of each was on  every table and I had two bottles of both as top-up tables which ran out. Same as the summer lunch, red was more popular than white.

And to cap it all, the Chairman presented me with an award for my work as Speaker Secretary and then I won the raffle.

I wasn't the only one wearing an outstanding jacket. This year John Hart joined in.

Jacqui and Alberto joined us.

Commonplace Book 2021

Posted out my second Commonplace Book

Front cover shows Joan at high tide on Sunset Beach, Gordon’s Bay, South Africa  in March 2020 shortly before we had to return home early because of RSA travel ban on incoming flights.

The upper back cover inset shows Peter, Krisie, Joan and Dan in the sea front apartment we rented in Criccieth, Wales in July 2021, and the lower one was taken shortly afterwards in the Prae Wood Arms, St Albans, England and shows Peter, Joan, Toby and Emma.

Grumping at Aspava

It was my turn to book a restaurant for the December meeting of the Grumpy Old Men. I chose Aspava and ten Grumps attended after three dropped out for various reasons.

Paignton

We decided to have a weeks holiday in a rented apartment (behind the tree at top left) in Paignton, having missed the Probus holiday there last year.

On Saturday 13 November we broke our journey at Amesbury at a Toby Carvery and had roast beef which came with an enormous Yorkshire pudding.

Our ground floor apartment in Paignton had a small garden with table and chairs and great views. But it was too cold to sit outside, however we could still enjoy the view from indoors.

I cooked dinner on Saturday  and Sunday and we went to the nearby Brewers Fayre on the beach below for Monday dinner.

On Tuesday we attempted to walk the coastal  path to Brixham, whose lights we could see at night from our apartment, but the path was too steep and in poor condition so we finished the journey by taxi, getting there in a persistent drizzle so we had a fishnchip lunch overlooking the harbour in the Brixham Fish Restaurant (below the pale blue building in the middle of photo, on left of the black building. We sat on the first floor by the windows overlooking the harbour)

Afterwards we walked around the harbour.

And along the mile long jetty,

which was used to embark troops and tanks.

On Wednesday we went to Torres Abbey in Torquay.

We lunched at the café by the gatehouse and toured the museum and art gallery in the mansion, now owned by the council.

The original abbey had been demolished in the Dissolution of Monasteries. In the grounds was a large glasshouse filled with tropical  plants and a flowerbed with plants used in Agatha Christie novels. The most toxic were substituted by less dangerous varieties, and some that were illegal were not there, as the gardeners' sign explained, we do not want to go to prison.

Thursday we stayed in Paignton, walking along the beaches and cliff paths.

In the evening we went to the Harvester where they had just introduced their Festive Menu, from which we ordered the Christmas dinner with hand cut turkey with sage & onion-seasoned roast potatoes, a Cumberland pig in blanket, red cabbage, green vegetables, sprouts, a sage & onion stuffing ball, Yorkshire pudding, gravy & cranberry sauce.

The turkey was succulent and there was plenty of it. The red cabbage was too sweet to eat and the potatoes had a funny texture inside, but amazing for £12.49 - with unlimited salad bar and bread rolls

Friday we drove to Torquay to take a tour of Kents Cavern, once home to prehistoric man, bears and hyenas.

After a fascinating hour-long tour we had scones in their café, and after following the path through their Woodland Trail, we walked down to Ansteys Cove which we had to ourselves most of the time.

As we couldn’t get a table at Harbour Light we had a fishn’chip takeaway from The Paignton Pier Chippy Co with a bottle of Stoneleigh NZ savvie from Tesco Express.

The F’n’C was superior to other chippies, freshly cooked to order and came with a sachet of tartare sauce and a giant wedge of lemon. The wine hit the button. We were glad we hadn’t gone to the nearby Brewers Fayre, and that we could enjoy our meal without ‘background’ music.

Great Yarmouth

Three nights in The Imperial, Great Yarmouth arriving Monday 1st November.

Tuesday drove to Horsey Gap to see seals.  Beach was closed off so seals could pup without being disturbed, viewing places along the top of the dunes, but although many seals in water close to the beach, none were on the sand. Clear blue skies, sun and no wind -- but chilly.

For lunch we found a great place for lunch - Dunes Café - nearby at Waxham Barn.

Afternoon back at hotel. As soon as I was on the beach I saw this seal just yards off the shore, but he was camera shy...
